In a long-awaited move, the Denver Broncos have finally traded wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. After being the subject of rumors for over 18 months, Jeudy is headed to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a pair of Day 3 draft picks. Multiple sources have confirmed this trade on Saturday morning, according to The Denver Post.
As part of the deal, Denver will receive the Browns' first selection in the fifth-round (No. 135 overall) and a sixth-rounder (No. 202 overall), providing them with additional options in the upcoming draft. Furthermore, trading Jeudy will free up a significant amount of salary cap space for the Broncos, as they clear $12.987 million in 2024 without incurring any dead cap charges.
With this trade, Denver now has approximately $31.3 million in salary cap space, according to data from OvertheCap. This opens up new opportunities for the Broncos to continue overhauling their roster under coach Sean Payton, who is heading into his second season with the team.
Jerry Jeudy, a first-round draft pick in 2020, showed glimpses of his potential over his four professional seasons but never truly developed into the top-line receiver the Broncos had envisioned. His best season came in 2022 when he finished with 972 yards and six touchdowns on 67 catches.
Throughout his time in Denver, Jeudy had consistently been surrounded by rumors about his future with the team. The Browns had previously made a run at Jeudy in 2023, but the Broncos decided to keep him. However, the speculation has finally come to an end, and Jeudy will now be part of a new team.
With Jeudy's departure, second-year player Marvin Mims, Jr. is expected to step into a larger role. Coach Sean Payton expressed confidence in Mims, stating that his progress as a receiver had been hindered by the team's efforts to find roles for both him and Jeudy. Payton believes that Mims has significant potential and expects to see growth from him in the upcoming season.
In addition to acquiring draft picks, this trade positions the Broncos with eight picks at their disposal for the upcoming draft, including three in the fifth round. This gives the team further flexibility to address their needs and continue building their roster.
The trade of Jerry Jeudy marks another significant move for the Denver Broncos, following the release of quarterback Russell Wilson and the departure of safety Justin Simmons and tight end Chris Manhertz. With a considerable amount of salary cap space and multiple draft picks, the Broncos are primed to make further changes and enhancements to their roster as they strive for success in the future.
