Thousands of Muslims from all over the world have come together at Mount Arafat, near Mecca in Saudi Arabia, to observe the holiest day of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The ritual at Mount Arafat, also known as the hill of mercy, holds great significance for pilgrims as they stand shoulder to shoulder, feet to feet, beseeching God for mercy, blessings, prosperity, and good health.
In the predawn darkness, thousands of pilgrims embarked on a journey to the mount, which is located about 20km (12 miles) southeast of Mecca. With tears streaming down their faces, many raised their hands in worship on the rocky slopes and surrounding areas of Mount Arafat. It is an awe-inspiring sight that evokes a profound sense of spiritual connection.
One pilgrim, Hussein Mohammed from Egypt, described the experience as "something great" and emphasized that it is the best day for Muslims throughout the year. Standing on the rocky slopes at dawn, he remarked, "It is the best place for anyone hoping to be [here] on this day and at this moment."
Mount Arafat holds historical significance as Prophet Muhammad delivered his final speech, known as the Farewell Sermon, at this sacred site approximately 1,435 years ago. In his sermon, the Prophet called for equality and unity among Muslims, leaving behind a powerful message that resonates with the faithful to this day.
The Hajj pilgrimage is one of the largest religious gatherings on Earth. The official commencement of the rituals took place on Friday when pilgrims made their way from Mecca's Grand Mosque to Mina, a desert plain located just outside the city. This year's pilgrimage, however, occurs against the distressing backdrop of Israel's ongoing attacks on the Gaza Strip.
As Muslims converge on Mount Arafat, they not only seek spiritual fulfillment but also carry prayers for peace and justice. The Hajj is a profound testament to the unity and devotion of Muslims worldwide, as they come together to partake in rituals that symbolize their faith and shared beliefs.
Despite the challenging circumstances surrounding this year's pilgrimage, the collective spirit of the pilgrims remains resilient. They have gathered at Mount Arafat, wholeheartedly seeking divine mercy and praying for a brighter future marked by harmony and peace.
