### Monroe Man Charged for Bomb Threat at Detroit Metro Airport
A Monroe resident, John Charles Robinson, 23, faces federal charges after allegedly calling in a bomb threat to Detroit Metro Airport on Thursday morning. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan, Robinson made the threat after missing his flight on Spirit Airlines Flight 2145, which was bound for Los Angeles.
Authorities reported that Robinson was late to the airport and missed his scheduled flight. Instead of rebooking, he allegedly contacted Spirit Airlines at around 6:25 a.m. to report a fake bomb threat. Robinson claimed he had information about someone planning to blow up the airport and Flight 2145. He provided a description of the supposed suspect and insisted that the individual would carry an undetectable bomb through the TSA checkpoint.
Following the threat, the Wayne County Airport Authority's Emergency & Support Services, Airfield Operations teams, TSA, and law enforcement officers acted swiftly. The plane was redirected to a remote location where passengers were safely removed, then transported back to the terminal. Spirit Airlines confirmed that the passengers were rescreened, and the aircraft inspected and cleared by law enforcement before it departed for Los Angeles.
Special agent Cheyvoryea Gibson of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office emphasized the serious nature of such threats, stating that anyone endangering public safety by threatening to bomb an aircraft would be swiftly investigated and prosecuted. An investigation involving the FBI Detroit Joint Terrorism Task Force, Airport Authority police, and the U.S. Federal Air Marshal Service led authorities to arrest Robinson as he was boarding another flight to Los Angeles.
Robinson appeared in federal court in Detroit on Friday and was released on his own recognizance. His next court date is set for June 27.
