Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay made a delayed appearance at the team's training camp, but it was for a good reason. Behind the scenes, McVay worked to address quarterback Matthew Stafford's contract concerns, aiming to keep the veteran signal-caller happy and bolster the Rams' chances of another postseason run.
After working with Stafford's agent, Jimmy Sexton, Rams management reached an agreement on a contract adjustment for the 36-year-old quarterback. Stafford, who has three years left on his current deal valued at $160 million, was looking for more guaranteed money to be added. While specific details of the new agreement were not disclosed, it is noteworthy that Stafford's $40 million average annual salary currently ranks 14th among NFL quarterbacks.
Stafford's motivation for seeking contract adjustments stems from the recent lucrative deal secured by his predecessor in Los Angeles, Jared Goff. Goff signed a four-year, $212 million contract, making him the third-highest paid quarterback in the league with an annual salary of $53 million.
The Rams had a sense of urgency in addressing Stafford's contract due to certain circumstances. Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is set to miss the first two games of the season due to an NFL suspension for violating the league's drug policy. Additionally, second-year pro Stetson Bennett was on the non-football injury list for the entirety of last season to focus on his mental health.
During his first season with the Rams in 2023, Stafford's exceptional performance in the second half of the season played a crucial role in the team's success. Los Angeles finished with a 7-1 record down the stretch, ultimately posting a 10-7 record and earning a playoff berth. His ability to handle pressure was evident, as he faced pressure on just 26.8% of his dropbacks from Week 11 until the end of the regular season, ranking third-lowest in the league.
The Rams' offensive line also played a significant role in Stafford's success, allowing the sixth-fewest sacks (34) and ranking seventh in pressures allowed (213) throughout the season. Stafford's 5.4% sack rate was his lowest since 2011.
In the crucial stretch from Week 11 until the end of the regular season, Stafford showcased his efficiency, completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,895 yards with 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Despite missing two games due to a sprained ligament in his right thumb, Stafford amassed 3,965 passing yards.
With the contract adjustment now settled, both the Rams organization and Matthew Stafford can focus on the upcoming season with renewed enthusiasm. The team aims to build on their successes from last year and make a deeper playoff run.
