In a press conference on Tuesday, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that quarterback Russell Wilson is still dealing with the effects of his calf injury. As a result, Justin Fields is slated to take the starting quarterback reps to begin the practice week.

Tomlin provided an update on Wilson's progress, stating, "He feels better today than he did over the weekend. And so what that means, I don't know as we sit here today. I know that we're going to take the same approach we take with a lot of people in terms of injury. We'll first start with his participation and his level of participation, his quality of participation."

The team will assess Wilson's ability to protect himself and be productive throughout the week. Once these evaluations are made, the decision to include Wilson in the starting lineup will be considered. Tomlin emphasized that speculation is futile and that the focus should be on preparing the available players.

Turning his attention to Fields, Tomlin expressed confidence in the young quarterback, stating, "As I sit here today, we're preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback. I think that's the appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell's hurt, he's not available to us. And so as you guys know, as a general practice, I focus my energy on those that are available and their readiness."

Fields made an impressive debut for the Steelers, completing 17-of-23 passes for 156 yards and rushing for 57 yards on 14 carries in their 18-10 victory over the Falcons. The team is optimistic about his ability to lead the offense.

The Steelers, who started the season with a win, are preparing for their Week 2 matchup against the Denver Broncos on the road. With Wilson's availability uncertain, Fields will continue to get valuable practice reps and may find himself leading the team once again in the upcoming game.

As the team takes a day-by-day approach, Wilson is not expected to participate fully in practice on Wednesday. The coaching staff will closely monitor his progress and make decisions based on the results and observations they gather regarding his potential inclusion and readiness for game action.

With uncertainty surrounding Wilson's timeline for return, the weight of the starting quarterback position falls on the capable shoulders of Justin Fields. Steelers fans eagerly await his continued development as he prepares to face the Broncos in what promises to be another challenging game on the road.
