**Diamondbacks Pitcher Corbin Burnes to Undergo Season-Ending Surgery**
Arizona Diamondbacks' right-hander Corbin Burnes is set to have Tommy John surgery next week, concluding his season and potentially sidelining him for the majority or all of next year, manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Friday.
"This is a truly difficult day for the Arizona Diamondbacks and for Corbin Burnes," Lovullo expressed on Arizona Sports 98.7's Burns & Gambo show. "These things happen in baseball. In my conversation with Corbin, he was very positive, even though I was quite shaken by the news. He’s committed to undergoing Tommy John surgery, stepping away from the game for a while, and coming back stronger."
The Diamondbacks placed Burnes on the 15-day injured list earlier in the week due to elbow inflammation. This came after he left his start against the Washington Nationals in the top of the fifth inning, having felt tightness in his throwing elbow.
Lovullo explained that Burnes had a comprehensive team to help him make his decision. "Corbin made this decision himself," Lovullo revealed. "He had incredible support, with everyone offering input on the possible options. After gathering all the information, he opted for Tommy John surgery. We stand by his decision."
Burnes, who signed a six-year, $210 million contract in December, has had an impressive run with the Diamondbacks, showing a 3-2 record and a 2.66 ERA in his first season. Known for his resilience, Burnes has made at least 28 starts in each of the past four seasons.
Lovullo emphasized that the team would not hurry Burnes' recovery post-surgery. "Corbin Burnes is an elite starting pitcher, and we are not going to rush this process. We will ensure he is fully healthy before his return. We have seen instances where pitchers come back too quickly and get injured again. We will follow doctor's orders meticulously and take our time with Corbin's recovery," he stated.
