The Green Bay Packers began their training camp on Monday, but unfortunately, their starting quarterback, Jordan Love, was absent from the field. General Manager Brian Gutekunst confirmed that Love will not practice until he has a new contract in place, a decision conveyed by Love's camp to the team on Saturday.

Gutekunst expressed understanding for Love's holdout, acknowledging the importance of having the quarterback participate in practice and work with his teammates. Although Love reported to camp last week and is participating in other activities, he will not practice until his contract situation is resolved.

After trading away former MVP Aaron Rodgers last season, the Packers signed Love to a one-year contract extension worth up to $22.5 million for the 2024 season, instead of exercising his fifth-year option. At present, Love is only under contract for the upcoming season, with a base salary of $10.5 million, significantly below the salary expectations for a starting quarterback in today's NFL landscape.

When asked about the possibility of a new deal for Love, Gutekunst expressed optimism, stating that both parties want the same outcome – a long-term commitment that provides stability for Love and the team. However, he also acknowledged that such negotiations require time and are more complex than people may think.

Reports from ESPN indicate that the Packers and Love are not close to reaching a new deal at this time. Nonetheless, Love's performance in his first season as a full-time starter impressed many. He led the Packers to a playoff berth and secured a victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Super Wild Card Weekend. In that game, Love threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, earning a near-perfect passer rating. Throughout the regular season, he accumulated over four thousand passing yards and threw 32 touchdowns, while the team achieved a 9-8 record with him as the starting quarterback.

As training camp progresses, all eyes will be on the Packers' front office and Love's camp to see if they can reach a resolution and secure a new contract for the promising young quarterback. Until then, Love's absence will be felt on the practice field as the team continues its preparations for the 2024 season.
