In a recent announcement, the Seattle Mariners revealed that Catie Griggs has resigned from her position as president of business operations. Griggs, who joined the Mariners in the summer of 2021, brought with her a wealth of experience from her four-season tenure as the chief business officer for Atlanta United in the MLS.
During her time in Seattle, Griggs oversaw all aspects of the Mariners organization outside of baseball operations. When she was initially hired, she became the first woman to hold a president title with a club in the majors, marking a significant milestone for women in sports leadership roles.
The Mariners expressed their gratitude for Griggs' contributions and shared that she was leaving to pursue a new opportunity on the East Coast, in order to be closer to her family. Mariners chairman John Stanton acknowledged how difficult this decision was for Griggs and commended her for her professionalism throughout the process.
While the team searches for a suitable replacement, Stanton will temporarily assume Griggs' responsibilities. Griggs' tenure in Seattle was eventful, including hosting major events such as the 2023 All-Star Game and the 2024 NHL Winter Classic. Additionally, under her leadership, the Mariners ended their 21-year playoff drought by making the postseason in 2022.
Griggs' departure comes after the resignation of Kevin Mather in February 2021. Mather, the former president of the Mariners, stepped down following the release of a video where he made derogatory remarks about players and club operations.
The Mariners organization now faces the task of finding a new president of business operations to build upon the progress made during Griggs' tenure. As the search begins, the team remains focused on continuing their success on the field and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment off the field.
