The Texas Rangers have opted to move rookie pitcher Kumar Rocker to Triple-A Round Rock ahead of their clash with Tampa Bay. This adjustment makes room on the active roster for reliever Chris Martin, who comes back from a 15-day injured list stint. Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News first shared the report before the official club announcement.
Rocker, a towering 6'5" right-hander, had just returned from a month-long hiatus due to a shoulder impingement that disrupted his season after just five starts. His performance in April was challenging, as he conceded over eight earned runs per nine innings with a reduced strikeout rate of 17%. His latest outing mirrored these struggles, as he surrendered five runs on six hits and walked twice over 3 1/3 innings in a 5-4 defeat against Tampa Bay.
Adding to his woes, Rocker committed a significant mental error during the recent game. With runners on second and third and two outs in the third inning, Jake Mangum's ground-ball to first baseman Jake Burger required Rocker to cover first base—an essential but missed defensive duty. Mangum's subsequent RBI infield single allowed both an RBI and the runner from second to score as Rocker was late off the mound and continued jogging.
The Rangers' manager, Bruce Bochy, minced no words in his postgame comments. "The biggest (mistake) is the fundamental of covering first base. The fundamentals got us tonight. That's a basic play. It could have saved us two runs," Bochy remarked. "He just forgot the situation and the other man on third and it compounded the damage. And that's the difference in the ball game."
General Manager Chris Young emphasized that Rocker's demotion was not meant as a punishment but as an opportunity for further development. Rocker's professional journey has been hampered by injuries, including a Tommy John surgery in early 2023. Limited minor league experience further complicates his path, marked by only 10 minor league appearances and a scant three starts in Triple-A.
As a result of these changes, the Rangers now operate with a four-man rotation comprising Jacob deGrom, Tyler Mahle, Patrick Corbin, and Jack Leiter. Nathan Eovaldi remains out of action until at least next Friday due to a triceps injury. With a day off on Monday, the Rangers have the flexibility to manage a four-man rotation should Eovaldi return promptly. Alternatively, they might call up Dane Dunning or employ a bullpen game to fill any pitching gaps.
