In a recently released video showcasing the Tesla Cybertruck's crash test performance, the electric pickup truck has garnered over 25 million views on Twitter. The clip, filmed at the Giga Texas Tesla Crash Lab, has left many eagerly awaiting the official crash safety rating of the Cybertruck.
As of now, the Cybertruck has not undergone the NHTSA crash tests, leaving its specific safety ratings unknown. However, the video, which features full frontal, side impact, and rollover crash tests, has elicited mixed reactions from viewers, much like the polarizing truck itself.
While the cabin of the Cybertruck sustained minimal damage during the full frontal crash test conducted at approximately 35 mph (56 km/h), it has faced criticism concerning occupant safety in this specific type of impact.
On the other hand, in both the side impact test at about 38 mph (61 km/h) and the rollover test at 16 mph (26 km/h), the Tesla Cybertruck showcased impressive performance. The stainless steel door and low center of gravity, thanks to the battery pack floor, contributed to the truck's resilience in these tests.
Interestingly, another Tesla enthusiast compiled a video collage that compared the Cybertruck's frontal crash test with internal combustion engine (ICE) pickup trucks such as the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, Jeep Gladiator, and Chevy Colorado. As shown in the footage, the Cybertruck exhibited less penetration in the frontal crash test, showcasing a crumple zone that appeared to be highly impact-absorbent compared to its ICE counterparts.
During a Cybertruck Delivery Event at Giga Texas, footage captured by Tesla owner and enthusiast Gail Alfar revealed the presence of a crash-tested Cybertruck on display. The Tesla truck had successfully completed a full frontal crash safety test. According to the information displayed next to the vehicle, the door's skin carried the majority of the crash load during the side impact test.
Despite this limited information, Tesla has yet to provide the public with comprehensive details on the Cybertruck's crash-worthiness. The eagerly awaited NHTSA crash test results will provide a broader picture of the truck's safety.
In the comments section, viewers are invited to analyze the videos and share their thoughts on whether the Cybertruck lives up to the automaker's safety predictions.
