**Tesla Robotaxis Set to Hit Austin Streets Amid Safety Concerns**

In less than a week, Austin residents might see Tesla robotaxis navigating their city. The ride-hailing service, which features autonomous vehicles, is expected to launch on Thursday, June 12. However, the rollout is not without controversy, as a federal agency has raised several safety questions.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk discussed the upcoming launch with CNBC, expressing a cautious approach to the rollout. "We want to deliberately take it slow," Musk stated. He noted that while Tesla has the capability to deploy thousands of robotaxis immediately, the company plans to start with just 10 vehicles in the first week, gradually increasing the number over time.

Testing of Tesla’s self-driving Model Y cars has already begun, with Musk sharing on X that these vehicles have been operating on Austin's streets without incidents. The service is currently available to a limited number of employees, indicating a phased approach to the broader public launch.

Despite these plans, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sought further clarity on the safety protocols for Tesla's robotaxis. In May, NHTSA questioned how the vehicles would handle various conditions such as sun glare, fog, rain, or snow—factors that have previously contributed to accidents involving Tesla’s driver-assistance software. Tesla has until June 19 to respond, with potential fines accumulating if the company fails to meet this deadline.

The City of Austin's Autonomous Vehicle Task Force has been engaged with Tesla since December 2024, providing training opportunities and information on municipal procedures. A spokesperson for the Transportation and Public Works Department confirmed the city's neutral stance and that the department offers uniform support to all autonomous vehicle companies looking to operate in Austin. Recent collaborative efforts included a training session involving Tesla vehicles and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

KXAN has reached out to Tesla for additional comments and will provide updates as they become available. The local community and federal authorities alike are watching closely as Tesla navigates the complexities of launching its autonomous vehicle service in Austin.
