The Washington Commanders, under the leadership of new general manager Adam Peters, are reportedly leaning towards selecting Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL draft. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero revealed the speculation surrounding Peters' preference for McCarthy, adding further intrigue to the highly anticipated draft.

Pelissero stated, "When I've had conversations here with executives for other teams who know Adam Peters well, who know the situation well, the most popular answer for what they do at No. 2 is J.J. McCarthy. So, a lot of drama still to come."

McCarthy has rapidly emerged as one of the top prospects in this year's draft class, surpassing USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye, and LSU's Jayden Daniels. The Chicago Bears are expected to select Williams with the No. 1 pick, leaving McCarthy as a potential option for the command of the Washington franchise.

The Commanders recently made moves in their quarterback lineup by trading Sam Howell, the 2023 starting quarterback, to the Seattle Seahawks. They have subsequently filled the void by signing veteran signal-caller Marcus Mariota to a one-year deal earlier this month. With the team entering a new era under the ownership of Josh Harris and the guidance of newly hired head coach Dan Quinn, choosing the right franchise quarterback with the No. 2 pick is crucial for their success.

In his junior year, McCarthy impressed with 2,991 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and only four interceptions. Notably, he led the Wolverines to a national championship. McCarthy's strong performance at the NFL Scouting Combine further bolstered his draft stock, propelling him as a potential top selection.

As the draft approaches, all eyes will be on the Washington Commanders and Adam Peters, waiting to see if the speculation regarding J.J. McCarthy becomes a reality. The decision to pass up on highly regarded quarterbacks like Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels would undoubtedly be a bold move, signaling the Commanders' confidence in McCarthy's potential to lead their franchise into a new era.
