Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is set to miss the first two games of the upcoming season after reportedly violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drug policy. CBS Sports' lead NFL insider, Jonathan Jones, has confirmed that Garoppolo's violation stemmed from his use of a prescribed medication without a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption.
According to ESPN, the suspension will impact Garoppolo regardless of which team he is on, with expectations that he will not return to the Raiders. Reports suggest that the Raiders are planning to release Garoppolo before mid-March to avoid paying his $11.25 million roster bonus. Should this happen, Garoppolo's fully guaranteed $11.25 million salary for 2024 is likely to void due to the suspension.
Upon his release, the Raiders could face a $17 million dead salary cap hit but would free up $10 million in cap space for the 2024 season. While Garoppolo's experience could make him a desired backup quarterback, it appears improbable that he will secure a starting role elsewhere in the league.
