In a surprising move, the New England Patriots have made their first outside free-agent signing by agreeing to terms with running back Antonio Gibson. As reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the deal was struck within hours of the opening of the legal tampering window.
According to the Boston Herald's Doug Kyed, the contract is a three-year deal with a maximum value of $17.25 million. Gibson will receive $5.3 million guaranteed, along with a $3 million signing bonus.
Gibson, a 25-year-old player who was drafted in the third round by the Memphis Commanders in 2020, brings both rushing and receiving skills to the table. In his 61 games, he has accumulated 2,643 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. Additionally, he has caught 172 passes for 1,283 yards and seven touchdowns.
The running back had an impressive showing in the 2021 season, recording 1,037 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. However, his rushing totals dropped significantly in the following years, with 546 yards in 2022 and 265 yards in 2023. On the other hand, his receiving output has improved each year of his career, reaching career highs of 48 receptions for 389 yards last season.
With Rhamondre Stevenson currently at the top of the Patriots' depth chart, Gibson is expected to contribute as a third-down back, given his ability to make receptions. Over the past three seasons, he has averaged 45 receptions per year.
It is worth noting that the Patriots had shown interest in another free-agent running back, Saquon Barkley. However, Barkley ultimately agreed to a three-year, $37.75 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The addition of Antonio Gibson to the Patriots' roster brings a versatile and dynamic element to their running game. It remains to be seen how his role will evolve within the team, but his proven ability as both a rusher and a receiver makes him a valuable asset for New England going forward.
