General manager Joe Schoen's pursuit of adding a quarterback this offseason has been realized with the acquisition of Lock, who will serve as an experienced insurance policy for starting quarterback Daniel Jones.

The Giants had been linked to several backup quarterback options in the market, including high-profile names like Russell Wilson, Tyrod Taylor, Jameis Winston, and Mason Rudolph. However, it was Lock, ranked 140th on The Athletic's list of available free agents, who ultimately landed the opportunity with the Giants.

Lock, 27, has made 23 career starts and will provide a viable alternative if Jones is not healthy or struggles on the field. While Schoen maintains that he expects Jones to be the starting quarterback in Week 1, Lock's presence adds depth and experience to the roster. The only other quarterback on the Giants' roster is Tommy DeVito, who is unlikely to be viewed as a legitimate number two quarterback by the team.

Having spent the past two seasons as Geno Smith's backup in Seattle, Lock did not see any playing time in 2022 but made four appearances last season. He led a touchdown drive against the Giants during the Seahawks' Week 4 victory and orchestrated a dramatic win against the Eagles in Week 15.

Known for his risk-taking and strong arm, Lock tied for second in average air yards per attempt during his last season as a starter for the Broncos in 2020. With 28 touchdown passes and 23 interceptions in his career, Lock is not afraid to take chances on the field.

The signing of Lock does not affect the Giants' draft plans, as they remain open to selecting a quarterback early if the opportunity arises. Schoen prioritized having a capable backup for Jones, but the team's draft strategy is not contingent on Lock's arrival.

Lock's addition to the roster puts DeVito, a New Jersey native, in danger of not making the final roster as the third-string quarterback. The Giants entered free agency with $38.4 million in cap space, but with the signings of Lock, Brian Burns, and Jon Runyan, they will need to create cap space, likely through restructuring left tackle Andrew Thomas's contract.

Lock's contract terms mirror those of Tyrod Taylor, who served as Jones' backup in the past two seasons. The Giants' quarterback situation remains uncertain with Jones' recovery from a torn ACL and his struggles in the previous season. While the team is reportedly exploring quarterback options in the draft, Schoen made it a priority to secure a capable veteran backup, and Lock fills that role.

As the Giants continue their offseason preparations, the addition of Drew Lock brings depth and experience to their quarterback position, providing a valuable insurance policy for Daniel Jones.
