In a surprising move, the Kansas City Chiefs traded their franchise-tagged cornerback, L'Jarius Sneed, to the Tennessee Titans, leaving a void in their cornerback position. The Chiefs, who once boasted one of the strongest cornerback groups in the league, now have a solid but young group with no veteran presence.

The departure of Sneed has prompted the Chiefs' general manager, Brett Veach, to explore potential solutions in either free agency or the upcoming draft. Veach is expected to target an outside cornerback who can start in 2024, allowing All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to maximize his playmaking abilities in the slot.

One option the Chiefs could consider in free agency is cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon, who had an impressive season with the Los Angeles Chargers, setting career highs in tackles and tackles for loss. Witherspoon is projected to earn a contract worth up to $20 million over two years, which may be within the Chiefs' budget.

Another experienced cornerback that fits the Chiefs' criteria is Xavien Howard, a former first-team All-Pro player who has twice led the league in interceptions. Despite a relatively quiet season in terms of interceptions, Howard showcased his skills by knocking away 12 passes and has demonstrated a full recovery from a foot injury.

Tre'Davious White, recovering from a torn Achilles suffered last season, could also be a viable option for the Chiefs. Additionally, reuniting with former cornerback Kevin Johnson, who has been solid since leaving in free agency in 2019, could provide the Chiefs with a reliable veteran presence.

In the draft, the Chiefs have a strong class of cornerbacks to choose from, with 15 prospects featuring among the top 100 according to The Athletic's consensus big board. One potential first-round selection for the Chiefs is former Missouri Tigers cornerback, Jarvis Rakestraw, known for his attacking ability and high energy on the field.

Another cornerback who could be a good fit for Kansas City's defense is Iowa State's Tayvonn Tampa, known for his aggressive tackling and ability to disrupt receivers. With his impressive wingspan, Tampa could potentially be a second-round pick for the Chiefs.

Further down the draft, the Chiefs could consider former Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart, who, despite a series of shoulder injuries, has displayed a physical playing style and strong presence against the run.

As the Chiefs look to address the void left by the departure of L'Jarius Sneed, they have a range of options to consider in free agency and the draft. Whether they opt for an established veteran or a promising young prospect, Kansas City aims to strengthen their cornerback position to maintain their strong defensive prowess in the seasons to come.
