In a race against time, the Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in a precarious position as they struggle to get under the salary cap before the impending deadline. With just a few hours remaining, the team is $2 million over the cap, making them one of only three teams currently exceeding the limit. However, the Chargers are faced with a daunting task as they are a staggering $25.2 million over the cap.
The contracts of key players Joey Bosa, Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, and Khalil Mack have become a major concern for the Chargers. These pillars of the team are not only their top cap hits but have also undergone restructures that have created significant numbers for 2024. All four players are well above the $32 million threshold, putting the Chargers in a critical situation as they enter the Jim Harbaugh era.
With the deadline of 3pm CT fast approaching, the Chargers must find a way to get under the $255.4 million cap, setting the stage for an intriguing salary situation. According to cap expert Jason Fitzgerald of OverTheCap, the Chargers currently have four of the top 12 cap hits in the entire NFL.
Trade discussions have already taken place, with the New England Patriots emerging as potential trade partners. The Patriots, who have needs at receiver and edge defender, have engaged in talks with the Chargers regarding possible trade candidates. While the Patriots have made some moves in free agency to address these needs, including the returning Kendrick Bourne and Josh Uche, none of their players come close in caliber to the Chargers' trade assets.
Interestingly, the Patriots' pursuit of Calvin Ridley could impact potential trade scenarios. If New England secures the 1,000-yard receiving talent, it could potentially hinder the acquisition of Allen or Williams from the Chargers. However, the Patriots do have Matt Judon and Uche under contract, establishing a solid foundation for their defense in the coming season.
Fortunately, the Patriots still boast over $59 million in cap space, giving them the ability to absorb one of the hefty contracts from Los Angeles. It is widely expected that the Chargers will make at least one trade involving these contracts, possibly even more, as Mark Maske of the Washington Post suggests.
While the Chargers' financial situation may deter teams from offering substantial assets, the pressure to cut players if no trade is finalized could work in the favor of a potential trade partner. This opens up the possibility for a team that believes it may struggle to secure one of these players in the free-agent market to strike a deal with the Chargers.
All four players at the center of trade talks boast contracts exceeding $20 million per year. Allen, who has been with the Chargers since 2013, is 31 years old, while Bosa, a key figure for eight seasons, is 28. Mack, 33, showcased an impressive performance last season with a career-high 17 sacks. Williams, 29, faced limited playing time due to an ACL tear.
With just a single season remaining on the contracts of Mack, Williams, and Allen, and Bosa signed until 2025, the Chargers are running out of time to address their cap situation. All eyes will be on the Chargers as the deadline looms, and fans eagerly await news of potential trades or releases that may help alleviate the financial strain on the team.
