In a potential shakeup for the AFC team, wide receiver Calvin Ridley's upcoming decision on his future could have significant implications for both his current team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New England Patriots.
Ridley's partnership with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville had a rocky start, leading to underwhelming offensive performances. Seeking to bolster their offensive arsenal, the Jaguars recently acquired Gabe Davis from the Buffalo Bills on a three-year, $39 million deal in free agency. If Jacksonville manages to keep Ridley, it would create a formidable receiver corps alongside Davis, slot man Christian Kirk, and tight end Evan Engram.
However, the New England Patriots, under new head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, are also vying for Ridley's services. With the departure of DeVante Parker and Mike Gesicki in free agency, the Patriots are eager to upgrade their offensive skill positions. While they re-signed Kendrick Bourne on a three-year, $24 million contract, Ridley could become the top target for either Jacoby Brissett or the player drafted with the No. 3 overall pick.
Importantly, Ridley's decision has time-sensitive implications. The timing of his choice will determine the compensation the Atlanta Falcons will receive from the trade that sent him to the Jaguars in 2022. As per the conditions of the deal, Atlanta would be entitled to a second-round draft pick from Jacksonville if Ridley re-signs with the Jaguars before the official start of the 2024 NFL league year, which is set for 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. However, if Ridley signs elsewhere or joins the Jaguars after the start of the league year, the Falcons will receive a third-round pick instead.
Ridley's choice has created anticipation among fans and analysts alike, as it holds the potential to significantly shape the offensive strategy for both the Jaguars and the Patriots. As the clock ticks down, all eyes are on Ridley as the fate of two teams hangs in the balance, awaiting his final decision.
