In a roster move, the Chicago Bears have agreed to terms with defensive end Jake Martin on a one-year contract, pending a physical. The 28-year-old player brings a wealth of experience, having appeared in 91 NFL games with 15 starts over the course of his six-season career.
Martin has previously played for several teams, including the Seattle Seahawks in 2018, the Houston Texans from 2019 to 2021, the Denver Broncos in 2022, the New York Jets in 2022, and the Indianapolis Colts in 2023. Standing at 6-2 and weighing 242 pounds, Martin has proven himself to be an impactful player on the field.
Throughout his career, Martin has accumulated impressive statistics, including 85 tackles, 16 tackles-for-loss, 18.0 sacks, seven forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and four pass breakups. In his rookie year with the Seahawks, he played a significant role, participating in 23% of the defensive snaps and 61% of special teams plays.
Martin made headlines when he was traded to the Texans in August 2019 as part of a deal that involved defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. He showcased his talent during the 2019 wildcard playoff game against the Chargers by recording a sack on Bills quarterback Josh Allen and recovering an Allen fumble.
The year 2021 marked a major milestone for Martin, as he became a full-time NFL starter for the first time. Playing for the Texans, Martin appeared in all 17 games, starting in 14 of them. He achieved career highs with 23 tackles, five tackles-for-loss, 4.0 sacks, three pass breakups, and even recorded his first safety.
Following his tenure with the Texans, Martin signed with the Jets in March 2022, before being traded to the Broncos in November of the same year. In 2023, he returned to the Texans for a second stint before ultimately being released in August. He then signed with the Colts on August 31, where he played in all 17 games, contributing on both offense and special teams.
It is worth noting that Martin comes from a football-oriented family, with his older brother, Josh Martin, also having played in the NFL as a linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and New York Jets.
With his extensive experience and proven ability to make an impact on the field, Jake Martin's addition to the Bears' roster is sure to bolster their defense for the upcoming season.
