The 26-year-old player has been in the NFL for four seasons, starting his career with the Arizona Cardinals after being drafted in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
During his rookie season, Jones predominantly played as a left tackle in eight out of nine games but on a limited snap count, accumulating a total of 54 snaps. In his second year, he showcased his versatility by playing across the offensive line, with 11 games at right guard, four at right tackle, and one game at left tackle. Despite playing 852 snaps, Jones struggled to perform consistently, allowing four sacks, three quarterback hits, and 22 quarterback hurries.
However, Jones seemed to find his footing in his third season when he was moved to left tackle. He thrived in this position, playing 13 games in the 2022 season and earning impressive pass-block and run-block grades from Pro Football Focus. With a 75.9 pass-block grade and a 74.0 run-block grade, he ranked among the top left tackles in the league.
Following his successful third season, the Cardinals traded Jones and a seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Unfortunately, he struggled to stay on the field with the Texans, only playing in five games, primarily at left tackle. His performance suffered, particularly in Week 1 against the Ravens, who led the league in sacks last season.
Despite his struggles and positional uncertainty, Jones brings a valuable addition to the Ravens. With Ronnie Stanley currently holding the starting left tackle position, Jones may not immediately fill that role. However, his presence provides depth and flexibility within the offensive line, potentially allowing versatile lineman Patrick Mekari to secure a starting role at guard or right tackle.
The Ravens still have several vacant spots in their offensive line after losing both starting guards and trading right tackle Morgan Moses. The addition of Jones could potentially address some of these gaps. Nevertheless, with the 2024 NFL Draft approaching in just a month, the team's final lineup is yet to be determined.
The signing of Josh Jones reflects the Ravens' commitment to bolstering their offensive line and ensuring the protection of their star quarterback. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, fans eagerly await the outcome of the NFL Draft and potential further roster additions.
