Wytheville, VA - Law enforcement agencies, including the Wytheville Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), are issuing a crucial warning about a lethal combination of drugs that have been discovered in various locations throughout the United States. This combination includes the highly potent synthetic opioid fentanyl and a powerful animal tranquilizer called xylazine.
According to reports, approximately 60% or 6 out of 10 illegal or counterfeit pills seized contain fentanyl, making it a prevalent and dangerous substance. Now, with the addition of xylazine, the risk to young people, particularly high school and college students in Virginia, has escalated significantly. Xylazine is known for being unaffected by rapid overdose treatment methods, such as Narcan, making it even more perilous.
DEA Administrator Anne Milgram expressed grave concern, stating, "Xylazine is making the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, fentanyl, even deadlier." The DEA Laboratory System has discovered mixtures of xylazine and fentanyl in 48 out of 50 states, representing a widespread issue. Surprisingly, the confiscated drugs seemed to contain xylazine in approximately 23% of fentanyl powder and 7% of fentanyl pills analyzed.
The number of cases involving this deadly combination continues to rise, causing authorities to urge parents to have frank conversations with their children about the severe risks associated with consuming these hazardous narcotics. This advisory comes at a time when the nation is already grappling with one of the deadliest opioid epidemics in history.
Law enforcement agencies are intensifying their efforts to crack down on the distribution and trafficking of these dangerous drugs. The Wytheville Police Department, in coordination with other agencies, is increasing patrols and conducting targeted operations to combat the growing issue.
The Wytheville Police Chief stressed the importance of community involvement, stating, "We need everyone's support to keep our young people safe. If you suspect any illegal drug activity or come across suspicious substances, please notify law enforcement immediately."
It is crucial for everyone to be aware of the lethal combination of fentanyl and xylazine present in drugs circulating across the country. By remaining vigilant and informed, individuals can play a significant role in mitigating the devastating consequences of this ongoing crisis.
