### Washington National Guard Joins Manhunt for Suspected Child Killer Travis Decker
In response to a urgent plea from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson has deployed the Washington National Guard in the ongoing search for Travis Decker, a 32-year-old man suspected of murdering his three daughters. The deployment, which includes helicopter support for law enforcement, was activated on Friday night.
"Tonight, I am tapping emergency funds and ordering Washington National Guard resources to support the search for Travis Decker," Ferguson stated. The governor expressed his deep condolences to the children's mother, Whitney, and emphasized the need for swift action to locate Decker, who is believed to be hiding in the rugged terrain of Chelan County.
The tragic sequence began when Decker's daughters, 5-year-old Olivia, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 9-year-old Paityn, were discovered dead at a campground near Leavenworth. They were reported missing on June 2 after Decker failed to return them to their mother as per their visitation agreement. Law enforcement believes Decker could be traveling along or near the Pacific Crest Trail.
Decker faces charges of three counts of murder and kidnapping. Federal prosecutors have also charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Court documents reveal that Decker had conducted online searches on how to move to Canada and was exploring job opportunities there prior to taking his daughters.
The search for Decker has become a multi-agency effort involving local, state, and federal law enforcement. More than 100 officers are currently scouring the Cascade Mountains, and over 500 tips have been received from the public. Authorities warn that Decker, with extensive military training in survival and navigation, poses a significant challenge in the difficult terrain.
To facilitate the manhunt, several popular hiking and recreational areas in Washington, including parts of the Pacific Crest Trail and areas within the Enchantments and Icicle Creek, have been closed to visitors. Residents in remote areas have been urged to secure their properties and remain vigilant.
Decker was last seen wearing a light-colored shirt and dark shorts. While it is not confirmed if he is armed, the public is advised to consider him dangerous and to contact 911 immediately if he is spotted.
The tragic events have shocked the state, underscoring the urgency of the ongoing search. Governor Ferguson stressed that locating Decker is essential for the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
