In a shocking turn of events, a Venezuelan migrant has been accused of shooting two NYPD cops, while also being suspected of involvement in a series of violent snatch-and-grab robberies in Queens. Bernardo Castro Mata, a 19-year-old who entered the country illegally last year, is now under investigation for his alleged role in the robberies that occurred on May 21.
Authorities believe that Mata may be part of a larger group of migrant moped-riding robbery crews that have been terrorizing residents across the city for several months. The recent pattern of crimes involves stealing phones and attacking women, with their credit cards being stolen and subsequently used in local establishments.
One of the incidents believed to involve Mata and another young man on a black and red moped occurred in Long Island City, Queens. The victim was forcefully robbed of her purse, which contained cash, debit and credit cards, an iPhone, MetroCard, and important IDs and insurance cards. Another attack took place in Woodhaven, where a 38-year-old woman was punched in the face and dragged while her wallet, including debit and credit cards, was stolen.
NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny informed reporters that Mata is being investigated for several other robbery patterns in the Queens area, with possible co-defendants involved. Commissioner Edward Caban revealed that similar scooters and bikes have been used citywide to commit various crimes, including shootings, robberies, and phone snatches. The number of such crimes has significantly increased in the past two years, raising concerns among law enforcement.
Interestingly, in February, it was reported that members of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela were being sent to New York City as part of the migrant wave to carry out similar robberies. This criminal enterprise has been known to launder the stolen proceeds.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump took the opportunity to criticize President Biden's border policies, attributing the shooting of the NYPD cops to "Biden Migrant Crime" on his social-media site, Truth Social. He also targeted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and lefty billionaire George Soros, accusing them of engaging in a "ridiculous political witch-hunt" and calling for a focus on border security and public safety.
As the investigation into these crimes continues, the NYPD remains vigilant in their efforts to apprehend those responsible and ensure the safety of the community.
