In a shocking revelation, Ukrainian officials confirmed that two colonels from the State Protection Service were part of a group planning to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The detained colonels, whose identities have not yet been made public, were said to be recruited by Russia's Federal Security Service, known as the FSB.
According to the State Protection Service (SBU), the colonels' mission involved identifying military personnel within President Zelenskyy's security detail capable of abducting and assassinating him. In addition to the Ukrainian President, other high-ranking officials, including SBU head Vasyl Malyuk and Kyrylo Budanov, the head of military intelligence, were also allegedly targeted by this covert network of agents.
The SBU revealed that one of the agents was tasked with surveilling President Zelenskyy's movements and relaying this information to the plot's masterminds. A plan had been devised to target a location where the President would be present, using a missile and drone strike.
Chillingly, it was found that the detained colonels had managed to obtain the drones they intended to use for the operation against President Zelenskyy. Moreover, they were suspected of sharing classified Ukrainian information with Moscow, further deepening concerns about Russia's involvement in the plot.
Ukrainian officials expressed their gratitude that the planned terrorist attack had been prevented, describing it as a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin prior to President Zelenskyy's inauguration. SBU head Vasyl Malyuk emphasized the failure of the Russian special services and vowed to continue safeguarding the country against such sinister plots.
The news of this Russian-backed plot to assassinate President Zelenskyy has sent shockwaves throughout Ukraine and the international community, highlighting the continuing tensions in the region. The Ukrainian government is expected to enhance security measures to protect its leaders and prevent any further attempts to destabilize the country.
This development underlines the pressing need for increased vigilance and cooperation between Ukraine and its allies to counter the ongoing threats posed by hostile actors.
