### City Worker Dies in Hudson River Boat Explosion Near Manhattan

In the early hours of Saturday, May 24, a tragic boat explosion on the Hudson River led to the death of a city worker. The incident occurred near the North River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Manhattan at approximately 10:30 a.m. ET. Responding to a distress call, police found a 59-year-old man unconscious in the water near West 138th Street. He was soon pronounced dead at the scene, with reports indicating he had been working on a vessel at the time of the explosion.

New York Mayor Eric Adams mourned the dedicated employee of the Department of Environmental Protection, noting his 33 years of committed service to the city. "Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this painful time," Adams stated. He assured the public that there was no suspicion of foul play and no impact on the wastewater facility, emphasizing the city's commitment to workforce safety.

According to New York Fire Department Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms, the explosion took place on the city-owned Hunts Point motor vessel within one of its holds. The vessel is used to transport raw sewage from New York City to treatment facilities. Simms revealed that the explosion flung the worker between the pier and the boat.

City Environmental Protection Commissioner Rohit T. Aggarwala expressed grief over the loss, highlighting the man's extensive experience and dedication to the Bureau of Wastewater Treatment. Two other workers were injured in the blast; one was hospitalized, while the other declined medical treatment on-site.

Simms noted that there was raw sewage on the deck due to the explosion, requiring decontamination for all FDNY hazmat and marine personnel involved. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.

This tragic event took place during the Fleet Week celebration, which honors the Navy and Marines and runs from May 23 to May 26. The explosion serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers faced by those working on New York City's waterways.
