**Tour Bus Overturns in New York, Injuring Nearly 30**
Nearly 30 individuals sustained injuries, one critically, when a tour bus en route from New York City to Niagara Falls overturned on Thursday, leading first responders to close a segment of a major highway.
The bus had previously dropped off passengers in Rochester and was heading toward the falls with 27 adults and one child aboard when it lost control on I-490 in Chili, Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter informed, as per the Democrat and Chronicle. First responders found victims in a state of confusion, staggering across the highway after the crash, with two individuals needing to be rescued from the wreckage.
In total, 28 people, including the bus driver, were taken to the hospital. One person remains in critical condition and was one of the individuals extracted from the bus, Baxter stated. Over 100 first responders and 18 ambulances were dispatched to the scene. Baxter described the chaos as "surreal" and noted that it was something they had trained for but didn’t expect to encounter in real life.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the crash as a criminal matter, but this does not necessarily imply that criminal activity was involved. Deputies have reported that the bus driver, who departed New York City around midnight, has been cooperating with the investigation and there is no sign of drug or alcohol involvement.
The eastbound lanes of I-490 were closed for more than two hours before reopening at 9:45 a.m., according to the Democrat and Chronicle. Partial closures on the westbound lanes of the interstate were anticipated to extend into Thursday afternoon.
Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her concerns, stating, "I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this serious incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders."
Operated by the Tribal Sun Bus Company, the bus had dropped off passengers in Rochester shortly before the incident. No other vehicles were involved in the accident, Chief Deputy Michael Fowler of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
