Authorities have successfully apprehended Daveonte Dixon, the suspect linked to the shooting of two Mifflin Township police officers. The incident led to a tense standoff in the Obetz neighborhood, leaving residents anxious.
Chelsea Pitts, a local resident, recounted the chaotic scene, stating, "We ran inside. They had us go inside. Nobody was out. Just seeing all those kids running from over there, it was just very scary." Pitts lives just a few doors down from where Franklin County SWAT officers found Dixon, 21, on Friday evening.
Dixon had been evading law enforcement since May 28, after allegedly shooting two officers near Mecca Road and Perdue Avenue. These officers were subsequently hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
The search for Dixon led authorities to an apartment on Thelma Drive two days later. Franklin County Sheriff's Office deputies, executing a search warrant, encountered gunfire from the apartment. According to Baldwin, Dixon fired several rounds at the deputies before barricading himself inside. SWAT officers eventually entered the apartment and discovered Dixon with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Cell phone footage from a neighbor captured the moments of negotiation between SWAT and Dixon. Reflecting on the situation, Pitts added, "When we figured out that it was this big and the guy that shot the Mifflin cops, we were like, 'Oh my gosh, that is just too close to home.'"
Early Saturday afternoon saw many children playing in the neighborhood, with parents shocked to learn of the fugitive’s presence nearby. Marissa Fitzmorris, another neighbor, discussed the difficult conversation she had with her child, explaining, "I had to sit down and talk with my kid this week and say, 'You may or may not see your friends again because their mom decided to make decisions in life that weren't the smartest.'" This was in reference to Jayla Call, who was also arrested for allegedly harboring Dixon.
Call, 31, was charged with obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence, as she is accused of deliberately hiding Dixon and deleting incriminating text messages.
Dixon faced charges in connection to the original shooting that injured the officers, including one count of attempted murder and two counts of felonious assault. Following his capture, Dixon was transported to a hospital in critical condition. Notably, no law enforcement officers discharged their weapons during the standoff. As of now, Dixon remains hospitalized.
