Stellantis, the multinational automotive company, has announced a recall of more than 1 million vehicles across various brands due to a potential issue affecting the rearview camera. The recall includes several models from Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, as well as a significant number of vehicles in Canada.
The affected vehicles in the United States comprise of certain 2021-2023 Chrysler Pacificas, 2021-2022 Dodge Durangos, 2022-2023 Jeep Compasses, 2021-2023 Jeep Grand Cherokees, 2022-2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneers, and 2022-2023 Jeep Wagoneers. Additionally, model year 2022 Ram 1500s, 2500s, 3500s, and 2022-2023 Ram Promasters are also included in the recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) cautioned that the absence of a functioning rearview camera image could impede a driver's visibility, potentially increasing the risk of accidents. Stellantis has identified a radio software glitch as the cause of the problem.
To rectify the issue, the automaker will provide a free software update to affected vehicles. Stellantis is actively pursuing over-the-air software updates for approximately 298,000 vehicles to ensure the proper functionality of the rearview camera. These updates will supplement the already implemented fixes on more than 735,000 vehicles. A spokesperson for Stellantis explained that affected vehicle owners will receive an update request on their multimedia screen, and recall notices will also be mailed to all impacted customers in compliance with regulations.
No reports of injuries or accidents associated with the radio software issue have been documented, according to the Stellantis spokesperson. However, to proactively address the concern, the company is taking swift action to resolve the problem.
Notification letters outlining the recall will be dispatched to affected customers in early August, streamlining the communication process. In a parallel development, more than 126,500 Stellantis vehicles in Canada are also subject to recall due to the same rearview camera issue.
The swift response from Stellantis demonstrates its commitment to prioritizing customer safety. By promptly addressing and resolving this potential problem, the company aims to mitigate any risks associated with the rearview camera malfunction and ensure the continued satisfaction of its customers.
Affected vehicle owners are advised to stay informed and take the necessary steps as instructed in the recall notices to rectify the rearview camera issue promptly.
