Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, was briefly hospitalized after being involved in a car accident on a Maryland highway, according to his spokesperson. The incident occurred on Sunday morning on the westbound side of Interstate 70, with Fetterman and his wife Gisele in the vehicle.
The spokesperson confirmed that Fetterman and his wife were evaluated at a local hospital following the collision with another driver. Fetterman received treatment for a bruised shoulder and both were discharged later that afternoon. They are now in good health and have returned to their home in Braddock, Pennsylvania.
Maryland State Police provided additional details, stating that the crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. Fetterman, 54, was driving his Chevrolet Traverse when it rear-ended another vehicle for unknown reasons. No citations were issued at the scene, and the crash investigation is ongoing.
All parties involved, including the driver of the other vehicle, were evaluated at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, which is located near the site of the accident in western Maryland.
This incident comes after Fetterman's previous health struggles, including a stroke in May 2022 while he held the position of Pennsylvania's lieutenant governor and was running for Senate. Following his stroke, Fetterman underwent the installation of a pacemaker and a defibrillator. Earlier this year, he also sought treatment for clinical depression at Walter Reed Hospital, where he stayed for over a month.
Despite these challenges, Fetterman has remained active in politics and garnered attention for his vocal support of Israel during its conflict with Hamas. In a recent interview with Bill Maher, Fetterman spoke about how his near-fatal stroke has empowered him to express his beliefs without fear of backlash.
As Fetterman continues to recover from the car accident, his spokesperson assures that he is doing well. The Pennsylvania senator has shown resilience in the face of adversity, and his recent experiences have only strengthened his resolve to advocate for issues he passionately believes in.
The thoughts and well-wishes of Fetterman's colleagues and constituents are with him and his wife as they recover and resume their duties.
