The decision came after video footage obtained by CNN revealed Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016, as stated in a letter sent by Mayor Adams on June 4.

The letter expressed Mayor Adams' deep concern and condemnation of Combs' actions, standing in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. The internal deliberations of the Key to the City of New York committee subsequently led to their recommendation to nullify and rescind Combs' key.

Combs, who grew up in Harlem, was awarded the key in September 2023. However, following the video's surfacing, Combs publicly apologized for his actions. On June 10, the key was returned to the city, as confirmed by City Hall.

CNN has sought comment from representatives of Combs regarding the recent development. Combs has faced significant legal challenges, with eight civil lawsuits filed against him since November.
