In a significant turn of events, Sean "Diddy" Combs has returned his symbolic key to New York City after Mayor Eric Adams recommended its nullification and rescision. The decision came after video footage obtained by CNN revealed Combs physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016, as stated in a letter sent by Mayor Adams on June 4.

The letter expressed Mayor Adams' deep concern and condemnation of Combs' actions, standing in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. The internal deliberations of the Key to the City of New York committee subsequently led to their recommendation to nullify and rescind Combs' key.

Combs, who grew up in Harlem, was awarded the key in September 2023. However, following the video's surfacing, Combs publicly apologized for his actions. On June 10, the key was returned to the city, as confirmed by City Hall.

CNN has sought comment from representatives of Combs regarding the recent development. Combs has faced significant legal challenges, with eight civil lawsuits filed against him since November. Among these lawsuits, seven directly accuse him of sexual assault, while one, filed by Ventura, has been settled. Notably, a lawsuit implicates his son Christian Combs in allegations of sexual assault, with Sean Combs accused of aiding and abetting.

While Combs has vehemently denied many of the claims made against him, he has not responded to all of the allegations. In December 2023, after four lawsuits had been filed against him, Combs defended himself on social media, dismissing the "sickening allegations" and accusing his accusers of seeking quick financial gain.

Federal investigators are now reportedly preparing to present the accusers of Combs before a grand jury, according to sources familiar with the probe. This development signals that the US Justice Department is advancing towards a potential indictment against the producer and Bad Boy Records founder. Bringing the individuals who have filed civil lawsuits before a grand jury represents a significant escalation in the ongoing government investigation.

As the controversy surrounding Sean "Diddy" Combs continues to unfold, the return of the symbolic key to New York City highlights the gravity of the allegations against him and the growing scrutiny he faces.
