Baltimore Ravens offensive lineman Ronnie Stanley has voiced his discontent with the officiating crew's handling of illegal formation penalties during his team's Week 1 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. Stanley believes that the referees were specifically targeting him to set an example, as the league increases its focus on this particular penalty.
During the Ravens' 27-20 loss, Stanley was penalized three times for illegal formation. The team, as a whole, racked up seven penalties for 64 yards, with five of them being for illegal formation. In comparison, the Chiefs were not flagged for any illegal formation calls.
Speaking to ESPN's Jamison Hensley, Stanley expressed his frustration with the apparent discrepancy in penalty calls. He stated, "I thought it was a little different. And then the way it was going through the game, I really feel like they were just trying to make an example and they chose me to be the one to do that."
Stanley highlighted that he believes the penalties were not being called against the Chiefs, despite feeling he was lining up correctly. "I'm looking at their tackles, especially the right side, and I know I'm lining up in front of that guy. And they didn't call him one time," Stanley explained.
Feeling like his credibility was being questioned, Stanley emphasized the importance of reviewing the game film to gather evidence. "We'll go back and watch the film and we'll make sure of it and we'll send it in [to the league office]. They just need to be held accountable if that's what it is. If it's that egregious that they are making those calls - and they shouldn't be - they should be held accountable."
Despite Stanley's grievances, the Ravens will now focus on rectifying any issues and preparing for their upcoming games, while the league will likely review the officiating in question.
