ANAHEIM -- Julio Rodríguez took a moment on Friday night to address the traumatic burglary he experienced last month, which was formally revealed earlier in the day by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office in Seattle. This incident was part of a broader set of charges laid against a suspect involved in multiple thefts, including the homes of Rodríguez's teammate Luis Castillo and other professional athletes.
"It's difficult," Rodríguez stated. "I just want to go play baseball and bring joy to people. To have someone target me and my family, trying to take away what I've worked so hard for—it’s really tough to handle."
According to documents provided by the Prosecuting Attorney's Office, a 21-year-old Seattle man has been charged with various targeted home burglaries, involving Rodríguez, Castillo, Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, and former NFL player Richard Sherman. These burglaries were reportedly carried out by the same two individuals, one of whom remains unidentified.
The records outline that Rodríguez's home was broken into on May 1, while his girlfriend was home alone. She took refuge in the bathroom, whispering to 911 operators while barricading the door with her body. The suspects escaped with nearly $200,000 in luxury items. Their getaway was swiftly pursued by police, with utility workers reporting potential gunshots during the chase.
"I want to enjoy playing baseball without fearing for my safety," Rodríguez expressed. "Knowing that there are people out there who don't care about your life, or your family’s life, is unsettling. No one should have to feel unsafe in their own home."
Luis Castillo's residence was targeted twice, with the first incident occurring on February 7 while he was in the Dominican Republic for the offseason. The second burglary happened on March 28, the same day he pitched for the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. A total of over $100,000 in valuables were stolen from Castillo’s home.
An attempted burglary was also reported at the home of Edgar Martinez on March 29, just one day after the second incident at Castillo’s. The suspects fled when they realized someone was inside the Martinez residence.
Rodríguez emphasized the importance of the support he has received. "The Mariners and law enforcement have been incredibly supportive. They’ve helped ensure our safety, and for that, I'm very grateful. I can’t imagine the pain of losing someone close to me."
These events highlight a disturbing trend of professional athletes being targeted, raising concerns over their security and the measures needed to protect them and their families.
