Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. and his family received terrifying death threats following a poor performance by McCullers in May, police have revealed. The threats came from an overseas bettor who lost money wagering on the Astros. The individual admitted to being frustrated and intoxicated when making the threats on social media, according to a Houston Police Department spokesperson.
The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed as no charges have been filed yet. However, the suspect has expressed remorse and requested that his apologies be conveyed to McCullers and his family. The threats followed McCullers' second start of the season during a game on May 10, where the Astros lost 13-9 to the Cincinnati Reds.
McCullers, a 31-year-old right-hander, described the emotional toll the threats took on him and his family. "It's been a tough evening," he noted back in May. "I understand people are very passionate and love the Astros and sports, but threatening to find my kids and murder them is a little bit tough to deal with."
The seriousness of the threats became evident when McCullers needed a moment to compose himself while recounting the experience. "I think bringing kids into the equation, threatening to find them or saying the next time they see us in public, they're going to stab my kids to death, it's tough to hear as a dad," he said.
Previously, the Astros organization had notified both the Houston Police Department and Major League Baseball security about the threats, which highlights the gravity of the situation. Despite the suspect's apology, the disturbing nature of these threats remains a serious concern for McCullers and his family.
