Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was briefly detained by police just outside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, before Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Videos of Hill being placed in handcuffs while lying face down on the street quickly went viral among fans driving by.
According to a statement issued by the Dolphins, Hill was pulled over for a traffic incident near the stadium and was subsequently released. Several teammates witnessed the incident and offered support to Hill. The team confirmed that Hill and all other players involved safely arrived at the stadium and would be available for the game.
Despite the ordeal, Hill managed to make an impact on the field, scoring his first touchdown of the season late in the third quarter. He made an impressive 80-yard catch-and-run from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, sprinting past two Jaguars defenders and reaching the end zone. Hill celebrated his touchdown by throwing the ball into the end zone and putting his hands behind his back.
Hill's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, expressed his concern for the player, referring to the situation as "heartbreaking." Rosenhaus stated that Hill was "distraught" about the incident but assured that he would still participate in the game. He also mentioned that Hill received a ticket for a moving violation while entering the stadium, emphasizing his confusion regarding the escalation of events with the police.
ESPN reports that Hill was involved in a "verbal altercation" with an officer and was subsequently cited for reckless driving. In response to the incident, the Miami-Dade Police Department director, Stephanie V. Daniels, released a statement confirming that an immediate review of the details surrounding Hill's detainment would take place, including a review of available body camera footage.
Tyreek Hill, a Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, had an outstanding season with the Dolphins last year, leading the NFL in receiving yards and touchdowns. He recently signed a contract extension with Miami worth $90 million for the next three seasons, with $65 million guaranteed.
As the investigation into Hill's detainment continues, the focus remains on his well-being and mental state following the distressing incident. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available to shed light on the circumstances surrounding Hill's encounter with the police.
