Israel’s military chief has hinted at a potential ground invasion into Lebanon, following an intense series of air strikes against the armed group Hezbollah. Lt Gen Herzi Halevi informed troops that these strikes are laying the groundwork for a possible entry into enemy territory. His remarks came amid a surge in hostilities, suggesting a significant escalation may be imminent.

Lebanon's health minister reported that over 50 people were killed in the strikes on Wednesday, which the Israeli military claimed targeted Hezbollah's intelligence directorate, launchers, and weapon depots. These air attacks followed Israel's interception of a missile launched by Hezbollah toward Tel Aviv, marking a notable intensification in the conflict.

In a statement to soldiers from Israel’s 7th Brigade, Lt Gen Halevi emphasized the intent behind the continuous strikes, declaring that the goal is to ensure the safe return of northern residents and prepare for a potential ground incursion. "We keep striking and hitting them everywhere," he asserted, indicating that the assault aims to dismantle Hezbollah’s operational capabilities.

Despite the ominous signals, there has been no immediate indication that an invasion is about to commence, with the US Pentagon stating it does not appear imminent. However, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) recently called up two reserve brigades for operations in the north, underscoring the growing possibility of extended conflict.

Hezbollah’s response has been fierce, including a missile targeting the Mossad headquarters in Tel Aviv, which was intercepted without causing casualties. Meanwhile, Israel’s air strikes have purportedly hit more than 280 Hezbollah targets, contributing to the more than 600 deaths reported across Lebanon since Monday.

This recent wave of violence has also displaced around 90,000 people in Lebanon, adding to the already significant number of displaced citizens. The UN reports that nearly 40,000 displaced individuals are currently living in shelters.

Hezbollah's attacks are being framed as support for their Palestinian ally, Hamas, with the group vowing to continue its actions until a ceasefire is declared in Gaza. The conflict, fueled by long-standing regional tensions, has severe implications for civilian populations on both sides. As international diplomatic efforts aim to de-escalate the situation, the region watches anxiously, bracing for what may come next.
