At least four individuals lost their lives and six others sustained injuries following a series of Russian overnight drone attacks on Ukraine's major cities, Kharkiv and Kyiv, officials reported on Tuesday. Additionally, the morning brought more tragedy with two fatalities and seven injuries in Kherson due to Russian shelling, according to a local governor.
Russian forces have consistently targeted Ukrainian regions with drones almost every night. Ukrainian military units managed to intercept and shoot down 26 out of the 48 drones launched overnight.
In the early hours of Tuesday, Kharkiv's Osnovianskyi district was struck, resulting in four deaths, Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed via his Telegram channel. This incident followed a guided bomb attack on Monday night that heavily damaged the Derzhprom building, a significant historical landmark dating back to the 1920s.
Kyiv also faced severe consequences, where debris from a demolished Russian drone injured six people and ignited a residential building, stated Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko. One of those injured in Kyiv's Solomianskyi district was hospitalized. The falling drone debris set several cars on fire, creating scenes of turmoil.
Eyewitness accounts reported smoke rising over the residential area in Kyiv's west, with visuals shared by the city's military administration showing burning buildings and vehicles. Despite efforts by Ukraine's air defense units to repel the drone attack, debris also fell on the Sviatoshynskyi district, although no immediate damage was reported there.
In Kherson, the morning attacks claimed the lives of a 62-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, as announced by regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin. The region, split by the front line, frequently endures Russian artillery, drone, and missile strikes.
Moscow has not commented on these recent attacks. Despite ongoing conflict since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian authorities maintain their stance on not targeting civilians. The 2-1/2-year-long war has claimed thousands of lives, predominantly Ukrainian, and reduced many towns and cities to ruins.
