**Daniel Lurie Becomes San Francisco's 46th Mayor, Unseating London Breed**

Daniel Lurie, founder of a local nonprofit and heir to the Levi Strauss & Co. fortune, has emerged victorious as San Francisco's 46th mayor. The recent general election saw Lurie defeat incumbent Mayor London Breed, prevailing in the 14th round of ranked-choice voting. According to unofficial results, Lurie garnered 56.2% of the vote compared to Breed’s 43.8%, securing 119,440 votes versus Breed’s 93,079.

Breed, who made history as the first Black woman to serve as mayor of San Francisco and previously worked as a supervisor, conceded defeat on Thursday afternoon. Acknowledging her tenure, she expressed gratitude to the city's residents in a poignant post on X, highlighting the honor and dedication she has given over the past years. Breed took office in 2017 following the sudden passing of Mayor Ed Lee and has served through multiple significant challenges.

Lurie's climb to mayoral victory was marked by a substantial personal investment of over $8 million into his campaign, which dramatically boosted his visibility and support leading up to the November 5 election. Despite his lack of prior elected experience, Lurie's campaign resonated with voters due to his outsider status and his leadership in the anti-poverty nonprofit, Tipping Point Community. He focused on addressing key issues such as crime, homelessness, an affordability crisis, and revitalizing a struggling downtown.

Polling ahead of the election indicated dissatisfaction among residents with Breed's leadership and the city's direction. Although Breed's support grew closer to election day, making the final race competitive alongside candidates such as Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin and former interim Mayor Mark Farrell, Lurie consistently led in first-choice votes and ultimately gained a decisive edge.

In a letter to his supporters, Lurie expressed gratitude for their dedication and called for continued collective effort to bring positive change to San Francisco. As he prepares to step into his role, Lurie has set expectations high, aiming to employ his nonprofit experience to tackle the city's most pressing issues head-on.
