A body discovered near the site of the tragic I-75 mass shooting has been positively identified as Joseph Couch, confirmed through DNA extracted from bone samples. The initial attempts at identification using soft tissue DNA testing proved inconclusive due to the advanced decomposition of the remains. The breakthrough in the case came when bone samples from the suspect were utilized for a successful identification, as announced by Kentucky's Chief Medical Examiner Dr. William Ralsto.

Dr. Ralsto commended the collaborative efforts of the medical examiner's office and Kentucky State Police (KSP) crime lab, emphasizing their dedication in achieving a definitive identification. The cause of death has been determined as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. However, the full official autopsy report will be pending the return of toxicology results.
