### Baltimore Man Held Without Bail in Viral Football Game Assault Case

John Callis, the 24-year-old Baltimore resident at the center of a widely circulated video depicting an altercation, is currently being held without bail. The incident, which took place in Federal Hill following a Ravens and Washington Commanders football game, saw Callis, dressed in a Baltimore Ravens jersey, assaulting two men who were wearing Commanders jerseys. The video of the assault went viral, leading to his immediate identification and subsequent surrender to the police on Tuesday.

Defense attorney Brian Thompson contended that Callis posed no flight risk, pointing out his newfound infamy. "He's got one of the most recognizable faces in the country right now," Thompson argued in court. He further insisted that Callis was not in a rational state during the incident, and the charges against him were excessive. "As ugly as the video is - these are punches. No one pulled a gun. No one pulled a knife. These injuries simply do not rise to the level of a first-degree assault," said Thompson.

Outside the courtroom, Thompson elaborated on the defense's position to WJZ, suggesting that Callis should have been charged with second-degree assault, which typically involves less severe bodily harm. "I don't believe this is a first-degree assault. I think it's a second-degree assault. First-degree assault requires serious bodily injury," he clarified.

Thompson expressed disappointment over the court's refusal to allow Callis into the OnePromise facility, a program focused on rehabilitation. He emphasized the importance of both punishment and rehabilitation within the criminal justice system, especially for someone as young as Callis. "He clearly has a problem. He needs help," Thompson stated.

Judge LaTina Burse Greene, however, was not swayed by the defense's arguments. She stressed the gravity of the evidence and labeled the attack as "clearly an unprovoked assault" on the Commanders' fans.

A Zoom call between Judge Greene, prosecutors, and defense attorneys is scheduled soon to discuss the possibility of releasing Callis to an inpatient treatment facility, where his case may take a different turn.
