The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Maui Police Department (MPD) have issued a plea to the public to report any suspicious activity following a series of explosive incidents in Maui. The most recent explosion occurred on August 8th on Old Haleakala Highway, leaving one person injured and a vehicle severely damaged.
According to witness Jessica Weatherholt, the explosion was accompanied by a blinding flash and a deafening noise that resembled an attack or bomb detonation. The device, a 7-inch by 4-inch cylinder-shaped improvised explosive device (IED), had been left in a trash receptacle before striking a passing vehicle. The driver was subsequently transported to the hospital for treatment.
The FBI and MPD have identified and collected several IEDs from various locations along the roadways between Kahului and Kula. These devices were found in trash receptacles or hidden from plain sight. Fortunately, all the recovered IEDs have been rendered safe by law enforcement officials.
In light of these incidents, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity that could pose a threat to public safety. Individuals are advised not to approach any unknown objects, especially those found near streets or roads. Instead, they should immediately contact emergency services by dialing 911.
Forensic experts are currently examining the detonated IEDs to determine how they were configured. From previous investigations, the FBI notes that IEDs may resemble small, makeshift baskets.
Both the FBI and MPD are working tirelessly to identify and apprehend those responsible for these acts of violence. Meanwhile, the driver of the SUV involved in the recent explosion has been released from the hospital.
Jessica Weatherholt, a witness to the incident, expressed her shock, realizing that she and her family narrowly avoided being victims themselves. She stressed the importance of vigilance and encouraged others to report any suspicious activity that may prevent further harm.
As the investigation unfolds, the FBI and MPD continue to seek the support and cooperation of the public in identifying the individuals behind these dangerous incidents. Together, law enforcement agencies and the community can work towards ensuring the safety and security of Maui residents.
Anyone with information regarding these explosions is urged to contact the FBI or the Maui Police Department immediately.
