In a significant escalation of tensions, Ukraine's air force commander, General Mykola Oleschuk, announced that a Russian air base in Crimea had been utterly destroyed in a targeted strike. Taking to Telegram, Oleschuk exclaimed, "All targets have been destroyed!" also expressing gratitude to the Ukrainian pilots for their exceptional work. Accompanying his message was the purported drone image of the site, illustrating the successful elimination of a Russian command center.
The incident occurred in the wake of several reports of explosions near the city of Yevpatoria, located just 13 miles northeast of the Saky air base. Local media initially documented up to 10 explosions, but the figures remain unverified by Newsweek at this time. In light of these claims, Newsweek reached out to the Russian Foreign Ministry for their response.
Responding to the events, the Russian Defense Ministry (MOD) declared that their air defense units had intercepted four guided missiles over occupied Crimea, without substantiating the claim with evidence. According to the Russian MOD statement on Telegram, the interception halted an alleged attempt by the Ukrainian regime to carry out a terrorist attack.
As a consequence of the strike, the Russian-installed authorities made the decision to temporarily shut down the Crimean Bridge. This move came as a precautionary measure, as the bridge has been targeted on numerous occasions since the conflict initiated by President Vladimir Putin in February 2022.
Earlier last week, the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported a successful strike against a Russian command post and ammunition warehouses near Sevastopol, the main city in Crimea. Details regarding the aftermath of the attack were not provided by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, but sources from the Atesh partisan movement revealed that a radar system and control center were destroyed. The National Resistance Center further claimed that the control center had played a pivotal role in establishing secure communication with the Kremlin.
In a recent interview with The Economist, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky outlined the country's objectives in the ongoing conflict, which included driving Russian vessels away from the Black Sea and continuing to target key Russian positions in Crimea. The successful attacks on Russia's Black Sea Fleet and vital infrastructure in the region, such as the Kerch Strait Bridge, have significantly bolstered Ukraine's outlook.
Zelensky emphasized the importance of isolating Crimea to mitigate the number of attacks originating from the region, signaling Ukraine's determination to achieve this goal. As the conflict escalates, both countries remain entrenched in a stalemate, with no end in sight. The destruction of the Russian air base in Crimea marks another significant development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
