The Ukrainian military has released a photograph showcasing a collection of Russian military vehicles scattered across the fields surrounding the conflict-ridden town of Avdiivka. Brigadier General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukraine's Tavria grouping of forces in Avdiivka, reported that there were "hundreds of units of knocked-out Russian equipment" in the vicinity of the town. The image shared by the Ukrainian commander displays three damaged vehicles covered in snow, providing a glimpse into the scale of the losses.
While Newsweek cannot independently verify the authenticity of the photograph or the precise tally of Russian losses provided by Tarnavskyi, it is evident that Russia has endured substantial casualties in the region. The Russian Defense Ministry has been approached for comment but has not responded as of yet.
Russia initiated its offensive around Avdiivka three months ago, resulting in significant casualties on both sides as winter approached in Ukraine. Although Western analysts initially believed that Avdiivka would withstand the assault and Ukrainian defenses would hold, Moscow has progressively advanced further into the industrial settlement.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, as of Wednesday, no confirmed changes had taken place on the frontline. Russia's military has suffered considerable losses in armored vehicles and tanks over the course of the nearly two-year-long conflict. The exact number of damaged, destroyed, captured, or abandoned vehicles remains challenging to ascertain.
The Ukrainian military recently reported that Russia lost 12 tanks in the past day, bringing the total number of tank losses since February 2022 to 6,050. Additionally, Moscow lost 22 armored personnel vehicles in the last 24 hours, increasing the tally to 11,238, as reported by Kyiv. Britain's Ministry of Defense also estimated that Russia lost over 7,117 armored vehicles, including nearly 2,475 main battle tanks.
The attack on Avdiivka has particularly highlighted the scale of Russian vehicle losses. Between October 10 and November 28, satellite imagery analysis by the Frontelligence Insight project revealed that Moscow lost more than 211 vehicles in the vicinity of Avdiivka. The British Defense Ministry supported these findings, suggesting that approximately 200 armored vehicles were lost within the first three weeks of the offensive.
The spokesperson for Ukraine's 47th Brigade, Dmytro Lazutkin, emphasized the importance of defending Avdiivka, stating that "as long as we exhaust the Russians, it is worthwhile." In response to the considerable losses, Russian forces have employed infantry-led attacks to preserve their remaining armored vehicles, according to the Institute for the Study of War.
Not only has Avdiivka witnessed clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, but the evacuated and destroyed settlement of Marinka, located southwest of Avdiivka, has also been a site of conflict, further depleting resources for both nations.
In a recent development, Ukraine's airborne forces announced that a Ukrainian paratrooper successfully employed a Javelin anti-tank missile to neutralize four Russian armored vehicles in a single battle, effectively thwarting a Russian operation. The destruction of these vehicles occurred around Marinka, as confirmed by Yaroslav Chepurny, spokesperson for the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade.
As the conflict continues, Avdiivka remains a heavily contested area with significant losses suffered by both Ukrainian and Russian forces. The Ukrainian military's photograph provides a glimpse into the scale of Russian vehicle losses, underscoring the intensity of the clashes and the toll they have taken on both sides.
