According to a report by Newsweek, Ukraine's Defense Ministry celebrated the loss of more than 5,000 tanks by Russia since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The ministry took to social media on Friday to announce the destruction of over 5,000 Russian tanks, proclaiming Ukrainian power to be stronger than the occupiers.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in a single day on October 20, Ukrainian forces destroyed 55 tanks, bringing the total number of tank losses by Russia to 5,047. These figures indicate one of the deadliest days for Russia since the invasion.

The casualties suffered by Russian forces are also significant, with Kyiv reporting the loss of 1,380 military personnel within the past 24 hours, culminating in a total of 292,060 Russian casualties to date. Additionally, Russia has lost 9,557 armored fighting vehicles, including 120 in a single day. The total count of Russian artillery systems destroyed is reported to be 29, bringing the overall losses to 7,012.

In addition to tanks and armored vehicles, Ukraine claims that Russia has lost 822 multiple launch rocket systems, 548 air defense systems, 320 aircraft, 5,326 drones, 20 ships and boats, and one submarine.

It is important to note that these figures provided by Kyiv cannot be independently confirmed by Newsweek at this time, and the Russian Defense Ministry has been contacted for comment. Estimates of casualties and military losses vary, with Kyiv often reporting higher figures than its Western allies.

Dutch open-source intelligence defense analysis website Oryx has confirmed visually that Russia lost 2,404 tanks since the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Their analysis indicates that 1,571 tanks were destroyed, 137 were damaged, 146 were abandoned, and 550 were captured. Ukraine, on the other hand, has lost 668 tanks, with 439 destroyed, 54 damaged, 33 abandoned, and 142 captured.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, during an interview with Chinese media on Monday, claimed that Ukraine's losses during its counteroffensive were eight times higher than those of Russia. Putin stated, "The losses are simply huge - approximately one to eight as a ratio."

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to see Ukrainian forces working to reclaim occupied territories with progress being slow. Intense fighting is currently taking place in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk and southern Zaporizhzhia regions.

Videos circulating on social media this week purportedly showed Russia suffering significant armor and tank losses in the Avdiivka region, where a fierce battle is ongoing. Drone footage from a bird's eye view illustrated the moment Ukrainian forces targeted Russian tanks with explosives.

General Valery Zaluzhny, Ukraine's commander-in-chief, stated in a video on Telegram that Russia is persistently attempting to break through Ukrainian defenses and surround Avdiivka. Zaluzhny noted that the enemy has been deploying assault units, substantial armored equipment, aircraft, and artillery in their efforts.
