In an interview with conservative commentator Tucker Carlson on his Uncensored show, Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke out against the idea of President Joe Biden federalizing the National Guard, describing it as a "total disaster." The tensions between the White House and the Lone Star State have been escalating due to an ongoing dispute over the border crisis.
The Supreme Court's recent ruling on January 23 allowed federal border agents to remove the razor wire installed as part of Abbott's Operation Lone Star. However, the Texas National Guard seemed to ignore the ruling and continued deploying the razor wire to repel illegal immigration, as mentioned by Abbott on X (formerly Twitter).
Abbott expressed his concerns about the prospect of federalizing the National Guard, which would mean placing them under the command of President Biden instead of the state governor. He assured that Texas is prepared to continue its efforts in building barriers if such an unlikely event were to occur.
The debate over the use of the razor wire intensified, as the Biden administration argued that it prevented agents from gaining access to crucial parts of the border. Notably, former Democrat Congressman Beto O'Rourke and Democratic Texas Representative Joaquin Castro have urged Biden to federalize the National Guard, drawing comparisons to the situation in 1957 when President Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas Guard to ensure compliance with the law.
Critics have questioned the legal authority of President Biden to take control of the state-based military force. Abbott, meanwhile, strongly criticized the White House for its immigration policies, accusing Biden of instructing his agencies to ignore federal statutes mandating the detention of illegal immigrants. He stated that he has the right to protect the state against invasion.
Governor Abbott received support from 25 GOP state governors who issued a joint statement expressing solidarity and pledging to utilize every tool available, including razor wire fences, to secure the border. They attributed their actions to the Biden administration's refusal to enforce immigration laws and the alleged illegal mass parole of migrants who entered the country unlawfully.
The clash between Texas and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) also escalated, as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton denied the DHS full access to the border and Shelby Park in Eagle Pass. Paxton vowed to defend Texas's efforts to protect its southern border, asserting the state's constitutional right of self-defense against any undermining attempts from the Biden administration.
The ongoing tension between Texas and the White House highlights the significant divide over immigration policy and the role of the National Guard in securing the border. As the situation develops, the question of federalizing the National Guard remains a contentious issue that both sides passionately argue for or against.
