In a stark development, UK intelligence has revealed that Russia may be experiencing its highest levels of casualties in Ukraine since the start of the war. The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has attributed these escalating casualties to Russia's recent attacks on the town of Avdiivka.
According to the daily intelligence update released by the MOD, Russian soldiers are being injured or killed at an average rate of 931 per day in November, surpassing the previous high of 776 casualties during the March offensive in Bakhmut. These figures, sourced from the Ukrainian General Staff, suggest that the past six weeks have witnessed some of the most severe losses for Russian forces in the conflict so far.
Experts have attributed the mounting casualties to Russia's reliance on outdated military tactics, rooted in Soviet-era strategies. Military analyst Mark Cancian, a retired US Marine Corps colonel and senior advisor at the Center for Strategic International Studies, highlighted Russia's continued use of the "classic military maneuver," wherein the enemy is encircled on three sides. This tactic, utilized multiple times in the Bakhmut offensive, has reportedly made Russian troops vulnerable to sustained counterattacks.
Furthermore, Russia's emphasis on launching brutal assaults with a substantial amount of combat power has resulted in significant losses, particularly in armored vehicles. Aerial footage shared by General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukraine's Tavriia Operational Strategic Group, revealed the extensive damage caused to Russian armored vehicles during these attacks.
Despite sustained efforts, Russian forces have only achieved marginal gains, inching about 4 miles closer to Avdiivka, according to the Institute for the Study of War. The ongoing conflict has created a grim scene reminiscent of a "zombie movie," as described by a Ukrainian drone operator who witnessed the destruction of Russian military columns.
While the MOD cautiously deemed these casualty figures as "plausible," it attributed the increased losses to the recent uptick in Russia's attacks on Avdiivka. As the conflict continues, the casualty rates serve as a sobering reminder of the ongoing violence and the toll it exacts on both sides.
It remains to be seen how these developments will impact the trajectory of the conflict and whether they will prompt any changes in Russia's approach or strategy. As the international community closely monitors the situation, further developments are expected to unfold in the coming weeks.
