In response to rising respiratory illness rates and the ongoing threat of the flu, COVID-19, and RSV, Lifespan and Care New England, Rhode Island's largest hospital groups, are once again requiring masks in patient care areas.

Lifespan, the state's leading hospital network, has advised its staff to wear Level 2 surgical masks. Additionally, masks are being provided to family members and visitors for use in patient rooms while care is being provided. Lifespan medical offices are also mandating mask-wearing for patients receiving care or treatment.

Care New England, the second-largest hospital group in Rhode Island, announced that masks are now mandatory for all inpatient units in its hospitals. According to a spokesperson, this policy was put in place last week as respiratory illness rates continue to increase.

The Lifespan hospital network operates Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, Newport Hospital, and Bradley Hospital. On the other hand, CNE manages Women & Infants Hospital, The Providence Center, Kent Hospital, and Butler Hospital.

As the holiday season draws to a close, the Rhode Island Department of Health is urging residents to remain vigilant against the flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Dr. Suzanne Bornschein, the Medical Director of RIDOH, stated that there has been a noticeable increase in flu and COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, while RSV levels appear to be peaking.

Dr. Bornschein, speaking to 12 News, emphasized that COVID-19 cases are lower compared to the same time last year. However, she noted that this could be attributed to at-home testing, as those results may not always be reported to RIDOH. The state currently lacks the same comprehensive metrics used earlier in the pandemic to track COVID-19 cases. Nevertheless, they are relying on robust surveillance metrics such as wastewater monitoring, COVID-related hospitalizations, and emergency visits.

With the reinstatement of mask mandates in patient care areas, Lifespan and Care New England aim to reduce the risk of transmission and help protect both patients and healthcare staff. As the battle against respiratory illnesses continues, these measures are crucial in maintaining the safety and well-being of Rhode Island's healthcare system.
