New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, has issued a warning to residents, indicating that the city should be prepared for yet another surge in migrants from Texas in the coming months. This announcement comes as the city is already reaching its "breaking point" in managing the influx of migrants.
Last week, NYC experienced a record-breaking influx of migrants, with 14 buses arriving in a single day. This increase in migrants is a direct result of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's initiatives to redistribute the burden of illegal immigration to cities in northern Democratic strongholds. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, since the spring of 2022, NYC has received a staggering 161,000 migrants, including those who arrived independently.
Mayor Adams addressed the press last week, acknowledging that the city had managed to keep the crisis relatively hidden thus far. However, he stressed that NYC has now reached a tipping point and can no longer bear the visual impact of the crisis. "New York City has begun to see another surge of migrants arriving, and we expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Texas Gov. Abbott's cruel and inhumane politics," Adams stated.
In response to these developments, Mayor Adams, alongside other liberal mayors in cities such as Chicago, has implemented new regulations regarding the drop-off locations and timings for buses carrying migrants. However, Governor Abbott has already started sending migrants to these cities via plane, bypassing the regulations put in place, as reported by WSJ.
Renae Eze, a spokeswoman for the Texas Governor's office, criticized the Democrat mayors for opposing their efforts to alleviate the burden on border communities. Eze emphasized that these mayors should instead direct their attention to urging their party leader, President Biden, to secure the border, a responsibility she claims he has continuously refused to fulfill.
Abbott's transportation program has caused a rift between powerful mayors, including Mayor Adams, and Democratic leaders in Washington. Adams has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of federal aid provided by the White House to address the migrant crisis in NYC. He voiced his disappointment last week, stating that he did not have a single meeting with President Biden regarding the immigration crisis throughout 2023. "It baffles me. New York City is the economic engine of the state and the country, and I don't have the answer," Adams expressed when questioned about his meetings with the White House.
As NYC braces itself for another surge in migrants, concerns are growing over the city's ability to manage the increasing numbers. Mayor Adams has called for immediate action from both state and federal authorities to address the crisis and provide the necessary support to New York City.
