New York City Mayor Eric Adams is facing serious allegations of sexual assault that date back 30 years, as a new legal claim has been filed against him under the Adult Survivors Act. This comes as Adams already deals with a separate federal investigation into his campaign finances.
The civil summons, filed late Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan and reported by the Messenger news outlet, accuses Adams of sexually assaulting the plaintiff when they were both city employees in 1993. The plaintiff's identity has been withheld by POLITICO.
In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for the mayor denied any knowledge of the plaintiff and stated that if they had ever met, Adams would not recall it. The spokesperson emphasized that Adams would never engage in physical harm towards another person and strongly denied the claims made against him.
Addressing reporters, Adams reiterated his denial of the allegations, stating that the supposed incident did not occur and he does not recall ever meeting the plaintiff. He further emphasized that he has never engaged in such behavior throughout his professional life.
The court filing lists Adams, New York City, the transit bureau of the New York Police Department, and the Guardian Association of the NYPD as defendants. The document alleges intentional and negligent acts and omissions leading to physical, psychological, and other injuries as a result of conduct that would constitute sexual offenses. Few details about the alleged assault were provided in the three-page summons, and a more detailed legal complaint is expected to follow.
The timing of the filing is significant, as the one-year lookback window for the Adult Survivors Act closes on Thursday. This legislation enables civil lawsuits to be filed regarding sexual misconduct, regardless of when the incidents allegedly occurred.
These sexual assault allegations come as the latest legal troubles for Adams. Earlier this year, his mayoral campaign became the subject of a federal investigation into alleged collusion with the Turkish government. The investigation involved the FBI seizing Adams' electronic devices and conducting raids on his aides. Adams and his representatives have reiterated that he has not been charged or accused of any wrongdoing and that he is fully cooperating with the investigation.
As the accusations against Mayor Adams unfold, the public eagerly awaits further developments in both the sexual assault claim and the federal investigation into his campaign.
