BURLINGTON COUNTY (CBS) -- Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBMDL) in New Jersey was placed on lockdown after reports of an active shooter on Thursday. According to the military base's official announcement on X, the lockdown was lifted shortly after it was implemented.

JBMDL issued an "all clear" message, assuring the public that all members of the Air Force base are safe. The lockdown, which lasted approximately 20 minutes, was initiated at 3:21 p.m., as indicated by the base's statement.

Situated 18 miles southeast of Trenton, New Jersey, JBMDL is located about 40 miles away from Philadelphia. It holds the distinction of being the only tri-service base in the United States, accommodating units from all branches of the armed forces. Spanning an extensive area of 42,000 acres, the base stretches across multiple towns and counties in New Jersey.

Rooted in history, JBMDL can trace its origins back to 1941 when it was established as Fort Dix Army Air Force Base. The base underwent a significant transformation in 2009, with the merger of Fort Dix, the Air Force's McGuire Air Force Base, and the Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst. This amalgamation resulted in the formation of JBMDL, combining the strengths and capabilities of all three entities.

Incidents such as active shooter reports highlight the need for strict security measures and preparedness at military installations. JBMDL's quick response and effective communication ensured the safety of its personnel and underscored the importance of maintaining a secure environment.

For now, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will resume normal operations following the resolution of this incident. The base remains vital to the nation's military readiness, serving as a crucial hub for various armed forces units.

This event serves as a reminder of the importance of coordinated responses and precautions to safeguard military bases and protect the dedicated men and women serving within them.

As further details regarding the incident are released, JBMDL will continue to provide updates to keep the public informed.
