The Puerto Rico Department of Health has declared an influenza epidemic, marking the first flu epidemic in the US territory since 2016. As of November 4, the island has recorded at least 900 hospitalizations and an alarming 25,900 cases since the start of the flu season in July.

According to Dr. Melissa Marzán, an epidemiologist with the health department, 42 deaths have been confirmed so far this season. An additional nine deaths are currently under investigation. The number of cases this season is six times higher compared to the same period last year.

In order to declare an epidemic, specific criteria need to be met. One of these criteria is that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's monitoring system for the virus must reach a high level. The CDC's data confirms that Puerto Rico currently has a high level of flu activity.

Health Secretary Dr. Carlos Mellado López urged the public to remain calm but be prepared to prevent the further spread of the virus. He emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated and taking preventive measures to protect oneself.

In response to the epidemic, the Puerto Rico Department of Health has announced the implementation of a mass vaccination program. Vaccination has been proven effective in combating the flu, and officials are confident that with adequate protection, the disease can be contained.

The majority of recorded flu cases in Puerto Rico have been among children and young people. Among newborns through 19-year-olds, more than 13,600 cases have been reported. Adults between the ages of 20 and 59 account for over 9,600 cases, while older adults make up approximately 2,500 cases.

During the previous flu season in 2022-23, Puerto Rico reported a total of 31,710 flu cases with 1,224 hospitalizations and 15 deaths, according to the health department.

Public health officials are urging the population to take the current influenza epidemic seriously and to follow recommended preventative measures. By doing so, they believe that the spread of the virus can be controlled, ensuring the safety and well-being of residents in Puerto Rico.
